<p>I really want a school that will challenge me intellectually…my mom is stuck on the fact that no matter where I go, any small LAC will give me a great education…however, I’m afraid that if I apply to all of the schools my mom really likes, I will end up just being bored because I won’t be challenged enough…I primarily would like to stay in the midwest, but wouldn’t mind moving out a little further towards the east coast, though I would not like to be in the south or the west…Does anyone have any suggestions of schools that would keep me interested and give me a challenge? Thanks.</p>

<p>If you’re looking for challenging Midwest LACs, Oberlin, Macalester, Carleton, and Grinnell all fit the bill - you would absolutely not be bored. I don’t know much about universities, but UChicago comes to mind. A few posts about “intellectual schools” in general:

<p>Some suggestions of good LACs in the northeast/mid-atlantic/midwest… Swarthmore College, Williams College, Amherst College, Vassar College, Oberlin College, Carleton College, Haverford College, Macalester College, Bard College, Bates College, Grinnell College, Sarah Lawrence College, Wesleyan University, Bowdoin College, Middlebury College, Colgate University, Kenyon College, Colby College, Brandeis University, Bucknell University, Connecticut College, Gettysburg College, Wheaton College, Hampshire College, Trinity College, Dickinson College, Lawrence College, Denison University, Skidmore College.</p>

<p>And if you’re a girl you can also try Bryn Mawr College, Mt. Holyoke College, Barnard College, Wellesley College, Smith College.</p>

<p>As for universities, you could go with (aside from the Ivy League)… University of Chicago, Washington University St. Louis, Northwestern University, Tufts University, Johns Hopkins University, University of Notre Dame, Georgetown University, Boston College, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Rochester, New York University, Case Western Reserve University, George Washington University, University of Michigan.</p>
