intellectual vitality (stanford essay)

would an experience with music be considered an experience that is intellectually engaging. very vague terms- so not sure if it has to specifically deal with academics. however, at the same time i will not be majoring in music nor do i have any plans to so should i stay away from it or should i still go for it because it did have a large impact on my life.

According to Merriam Webster’s Dictionary…

intellectual- developed or chiefly guided by the intellect rather than by emotion or experience

intellect- the capacity for knowledge

vitality- physical or mental vigor especially when highly developed

I don’t believe that intellectual vitality applies to merely academics, so I think writing about music should be okay (so long as you write it in a way that clearly answers the prompt. Be original but don’t try to force your ideas to fit the prompt.)

You mentioned that music had a big impact on your life. Even if you’re not going to major in it, it’s encouraging for the readers to see that you’re interested in the world around you. It’d be nice for one of your essays to deal w/ your intended major, but remember that a lot of people switch majors once they get into college. For instance, my intellectual vitality essay was my experience w/ studying Chinese even I was pretty certain I wasn’t going to major in it.

In essence, this essay is supposed to reflect your passion as a student and scholar and any active pursuit and enthusiasm in any field should be given merit. Besides, I think it’s great when music non-majors can be moved by music.
