The following is a list of the classes I have taken as of right now, and as you can see, I’ve only gotten B’s in the ones that are actually associated with my MAJOR: Political Science. You can see why I got a little OCD when someone pointed it out…

Will this affect my chances of transferring to UC Berkeley/UCLA? My GPA right now is: 3.72…

Sorry about the dumb typo in the title…I meant Transfer!

Average admitted GPA for poli sci majors to UCLA was 3.77 last year and is probably the same or slightly higher for UC Berkeley, so your GPA, while good, is slightly low. In addition, UCLA takes major GPA in to consideration. Very much, in fact, so this will hurt you. However, I wouldn’t worry too much…you are still a competitive applicant for that school in my opinion. Berkeley doesn’t take major GPA into consideration from what I’ve heard, but obviously you’ll want to confirm that. Getting B’s in major pre-req classes isn’t the end of the world. I’d worry more about C’s, W’s, and not completing all of them in time.

Judging from the list of classes you’ve taken and when you’ve taken them, I assume that you didn’t apply for transfer yet. Is that correct? If so, you still have time to raise your GPA and make a very good impression with the admissions officers by taking elective political science classes and doing well in them. I think this is the best course of action.

If you had like a 3.1 GPA or something, I’d worry, but you don’t. I think you’ll be fine. One thing to note, though: UCLA is far more concerned with the numbers in the application process(Your GPA, major GPA, etc.) than your extracurriculars and personal statement. They’re kind of notorious for that. Berkeley, on the other hand, still places emphasizes extracurriculars and the personal statement(Not to nearly the same degree that it does for freshman applicants. Berkeley itself states that grades and pre-req completion are most important for transfer students, but they definitely take into account extracurriculars and the PS. So work hard on those and do so with conviction).

I definitely think you can be an attractive applicant to either of those schools if you keep up your hard work. You’re certainly ahead of the curve; the average GPA for students who applied to UCLA’s poli sci major was 3.42. The GPA for Berkeley’s applicants is probably a little higher or the same. You have the edge over those applicants and if you continue to work hard in your classes, your edge over your fellow poli sci majors will only increase. I hope that’'s comforting and makes you feel a little more confident that you can get in to those schools. Good luck!

I don’t think I’ve ever read a more direct, to the point, and helpful answer! Thank you so much for the ‘realistic’ encouragement. I will really keep all of this in mind, and honestly appreciate how you thoroughly covered all related questions in your answer.
And you are correct, I have not applied yet…I intend to finish my classes by the end of summer '15 and apply at the end of that term. I should be finishing all my pre-reqs by this fall. And I hope and will work to keep that GPA up that whole time.
And yes, I’ve heard about that difference b/w UCLA and UCB…

Thanks again & again. The advice I usually get on here is priceless. This is definitely a good example!

I’m happy to know that you think my advice is helpful. I’ve been helped many times by this community when I was starting out as a community college student. Now that I’ve learned more about the transfer process and am on my way to transferring out(Hopefully, anyway. I applied back in November. Wish me luck!), I try to help people like yourself. I know the transfer process is scary and confusing. Lord knows that counselors sometimes make that worse with their misinformation. CollegeConfidential has helped me a lot. I’m just paying it forward. :D

I noticed that you’ve taken honors classes at your community college. Does your college have a TAP program and are you in it? If so, your chances of getting admitted to UCLA increase by a substantial percentage, and I mean SUBSTANTIAL. Not for UC Berkeley, though lol
