I am looking for a school where I can combine international development/education and photography. Ideally not NYU’s Gallatin school.
Have you considered looking into schools outside the country?
This isn’t really what graduate school is designed for.
Graduate school isn’t about pursuing interests or exploring areas like undergrad is. It’s preparation for a specific set of careers. Graduate school is expensive and the opportunity cost can be large depending on how much time you spend there. It’s not a time to hedge your bets and try to explore two completely disparate areas; you get a graduate degree because you need it to do something specific. That’s probably the reason you can’t find any degrees like that - because they don’t exist and, quite frankly, would be useless to the vast majority of people. Even at Gallatin, the point of an individualized graduate program would be to design something that doesn’t exist but that is useful to a future career.
You certainly don’t need a master’s degree to do photography, so if you want that as a career your best bet is to apprentice with a photographer and build a portfolio.
If you want international development, there are plenty of schools of international affairs that offer that degree. International education is a distinct field and could be found probably at schools of education or schools of international affairs depending on the university.
Are you interested in educating people about international development through photojournalism? I think with that perspective, what you’re trying to do makes sense - but you wouldn’t need a graduate degree in any field to do it. What did/are you studying in undergrad? What work experiences do you have? What is your ultimate career goal?
If your goal is photojournalism, the subject matter you pursue will largely be self-taught. Your technical skills in photography and journalism, and your internships and related work experiences will play a much larger role in landing you a job.
Until you elaborate on what exactly you want to do with those three subjects, we can’t give you clear guidance to achieve your goals. If you really are just interested in learning more about 3 different subjects, then you won’t find a degree to meet your needs.
