I love thinking about technology and society, and I’ve noticed that classes on this topic have been getting more popular. I’ve seen English classes on video games, I’ve heard of classes that analyze texts like “Black Mirror,” and I even found that some universities offer a certificate. Has anyone else noticed the same thing? Anyone else like me who loves these classes?
I’m very interested in the subject. Sherry Turkle, a professor at MIT wrote a book about the negative effects technology has on society.
This is my career field! Or at least, my field is a very closely related one. I’m a researcher at a major technology company, and I do research on how people use our products in real life and how to improve them so that they serve the functions people want. The field is called user experience research (or human-computer interaction).
If you are interested in this, consider colleges and universities that offer a major in Science & Technology Studies/Science, Technology, and Society. I wish I had realized I was interested in this as an undergrad because I might’ve majored in it myself!
