Interested in video game industry. Applying for CS. What should I include?

So I’m planning to apply for CS with the goal of pursuing a career in the video game industry.

My personal statement has to demonstrate how and why I’m interested in the subject. I have to convince the admissions officers that I possess a deep passion for the subject and am willing to work hard for the sake of it.

My mom is pretty adamant on her view that I should search up the current areas of research in the field of CS and talk about those, to make it seem like I have a worldly view or something.

I on the other hand, think that my PS would be more effective if I focused on my passion for video gaming. I really don’t know too much about the “cutting-edge developments” in CS, and I feel that if I just write down what I read, it would feel sort of fake and unconvincing. Because the reason I’m interested in pursuing a CS degree is not because of those leading areas of research, but my past experiences with video games. But she argues that I might as well go to an Art Institute instead of a top tier university if that were the case.

Could I get some advice from people who have written PS/Application Essays before?
