Interlochen Summer Voice Program

How competitive is the Interlochen summer VP? I am applying, but I am curious as to the acceptance rate and such. I heard that musicians/performers from all over the world apply.

Solo Artist is more competitive than Vocal Arts and Operetta, but both are great. My D chose VAO because she wanted piano instruction as an elective. She did not want to give up piano lessons and practice for a month. She loved it, and her home voice teacher felt she had improved a lot in the six weeks. Good voice teachers teach in both programs. If you apply for the solo artist 4 week program, they’ll automatically consider you for the 6 week operetta program. D said there were really good singers in both, and you do get to sing solos in VAO–D sang in the “honor’s recital.” My D LOVED the whole experience, though she did say living with 18 girls in one cabin was a bit of an adjustment. Bring earplugs!

Vocal Soloist Studies Program is one of the most competitive program to be admitted to at Interlochen Arts Camp. Approx. 25-30 students attend. I don’t know how many apply. The quality of students is very high. The students tend to be mostly rising seniors with some younger students as well. Occasionally there are students who are rising college freshmen.

Sopranomom92 and Prefect:
Thank you very much for your responses! They were very informative. It seems to be as
competitive as I had guessed.

For the vocal arts and operetta program, does anyone know approximately how many students are accepted?

I highly recommend the vocal programs at Interlochen, our family has personal experience of two years with those particular programs. I never heard the number of applicants and acceptances, I’m not sure that is public information and it would change from year to year, of course. The quality of the program, teachers, students, performances, venues and overall experience is topnotch!

Ohh I see, so that information isn’t released. However, I was wondering do you know how many people actually attend the Vocal Arts and Operetta program, as in how many were in that particular program at the time of your family member’s attendance.

Well, you could always phone and ask them. I don’t recall the exact numbers of students in each vocal program, however I am certain that there are enough to give a lot of performances; the level is very high and students are brought to an even higher level by the program.

The vocal solo studies program has between 28 and 32 students each year. There are quite a few more in the choral/operetta and the level in each program is very high. I think the year between junior and senior is optimum for the VSS program as they spend a lot of time talking about college selection, audition repertoire etc. Also, you can only be accepted into that program once where you can do the choral program as many times as you are accepted.
