I am currently interning at a hospital in the IT department under my current manager (technical manager). I was originally talking to another manager (application manager) in the same department; however, he wanted to know what I was interested in I told him more into the technical background such as DBAs and business intellegence. He referred me to the technical manager who was really easy going at first and is my supervisor for my internship now…fast forward a few months later, he has been busy, and I have been sitting around doing nothing. I recently started looking into the side of the application manager who I was in touch in first. I am very interested in that side as I can relate to it after doing a couple shadows… My question is, how do apporach either manager of trying to transition a switch between the two? When I did a one on one with the technical manager, he suggest I take time away and think what I really want to do (basically leave and come back to him when i have a niche) , however, I noticed his chain is geared more to developed positions such as architects, administrators, and team tech leaders. So basically I was learning too complexed positions based on my knowledge and background level…The applications manager is more geared toward the maintaining and planning, less technical roles of the company, where I feel as if my skill level is up to par and is easier to follow…

Bascially, Im starting to think I went into a field that I cant really land a job after as it is at a higher tier and more complexed to add value to myself… Rather than going into the field that I have knowledge in and can be an asset to their team at the lower level…keep in mind that I didnt know that it would be like this until recently. When I first went into the internship, i wanted to learn more of the technical side and now learning it, it isnt my cup of tea.

any suggestions?
