I have been hearing people that don’t get into their major as a transfer or freshman internally transfer to their desired major later on. They will either choose a really “easy” major that they can get into and then a semester or two later reapply to a major that they want. Is there any downside to this? And is this what the term “internal” transfer means? Would this be a smart thing to do if you HAD to transfer because of cost?
I’d generally recommend against this route. The downsides are 1) if the student does not get into the desired major the second time around he/she will be stuck and 2) a number of schools do not allow many internal transfers. Colleges are wise to the “game” of having people apply to a less selective program and then try to transfer into the more selective program and they often actively discourage the practice my making these type of internal transfers difficult if not impossible. You need to research what the story is at the school(s) you are considering.
The schools I am deciding between are UT Austin and Texas A&M. Generally, I hear that external transferring into the schools of business at each school at VERY VERY VERY difficult if not, impossible and therefore they say its easier to internal transfer. But I am scared that I do not get the major I desire. Im not sure what to do.
