Schools
Applied to Uk as well, should i apply to stony brook and Virginia tech??not sure since theyre out of budget without significant aid (think half the COA)

If you guys have any recommendations for where to apply where the COA is under $50,000 a year and realistically i could get in pls share

I had a dip in AS grades due to family matters

You are coming from a high school system that most of us are not familiar with. This makes it difficult to interpret your grades. Bowdoin College will almost certainly have someone on their admissions staff who does know how to interpret your grades.

Most applicants to Bowdoin college are relatively close to the top of their class in high school, or at least top 10%. With this, Bowdoin has an acceptance rate in the single digit percentages. If you are the top student in your high school, then you are more likely to be rejected rather than accepted.

I am having some trouble understanding your grades, but to me it looks like admissions to Bowdoin is very unlikely.

In the unlikely chance that you do get into Bowdoin then let us (or me) know. I am quite familiar with the area around Bowdoin and have toured the school twice (one daughter was interested in Bowdoin, but ended up going somewhere else).

For small schools in the USA the problem I am seeing is that, at least for the schools that I am familiar with, the schools that you could get into will not be the ones that offer financial aid for international students. Thus you run into either problems with acceptance or problems with affordability.

There are a few schools in Canada that might be possible for admissions and also come in under US$50,000 per year. They might be at or over this number in Canadian dollars, but the exchange rate is favorable for those of us using other currencies to pay for education in Canada. For small schools you might want to for example look at Acadia University (in Nova Scotia), Bishop’s (in Quebec), U.PEI (in Prince Edward Island), and Mount Allison or U.N.B. (both in New Brunswick). Perhaps slightly larger but you could also look at Memorial University of Newfoundland or Dalhousie. There are other good universities further west but I am not sure which of them are likely to fit your budget. The most famous schools such as Toronto and McGill are less likely for admissions and also less likely to meet your budget.

Thank you, i really appreciate it. My school counselor wasn’t very well versed with American/canadian colleges so this was helpful.

I will definitely look into what you recommended.

Your grades are solid if not at the very top (this would be straight A both on IGCSEs and ALevels).
50k is a solid budget.
Possibilities
For Math in particular, apply to St Olaf. They’re nationally known for math and very good for environmental science, they have some merit aid but you’d need to register with their “join our mailing list” and click on everything they send - in short demonstrate interest and apply soon.
Dickinson would be another selective college that’s international-friendly.
Allegheny, Wooster, Muhlenberg, Roger Williams, Eckerd, could all work.
UNC Wilmington for anything related to the ocean; U Rhodes Island?? (see if you can still apply to the Honors college at either one).
SUNY Binghamton and SUNY Geneseo are both more residential than Stony Brook, which is important for an international student.

Bowdoin’s most recent CDS indicates an acceptance rate for international applicants of 1.4%. For a realistic chance of admission, you will need to present a substantially stronger application than that of the average international applicant to this school.

Wouldn’t grades of A* represent the top for A Levels?

A* is an A.
