International Business degree?

What are the job prospects?
Average salary?
Nature of the work?
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

(call me crazy, but I’m looking for a major to pair with Film Production, and I’m researching this one)

International Business is useless in the business world and even more useless in the film production world

I highly doubt it’s “useless” in the business world.

It’s useless.

Is there reasoning behind you saying that? Do you have experience in the global business arena?

Job prospects- very slim unless you go to the international business program at NYU or South Carolina which likely have direct links to the slim number of corporations that hire international business grads.

Average salary- probably mediocre because the international business students that do get jobs probably are going into export/import analyst positions for the government.

The fact that you asked the question and want to “pair” it with film production shows that you don’t know hardly anything about the international business major. Hence, you should LISTEN and not mindlessly doubt people on this board. International business is a glorified management major with a international focus.

I’m NOT talking to you Trizz75. Your info was actually helpful.

Also, I need some sort of practical degree since the Film Industry is so difficult. That’s why I’m researching these majors, and since I’m researching them, I don’t know anything about them. Put the pieces together.

Film production majors have as difficult job prospects as international business majors. I would look for other options to find a “practical” major.

What you have to ask yourself is what, exactly, you want to do in the film industry. I don’t know about ‘international business’ (although it sounds kind of vague), but depending on what you want to do in the film industry, a degree can, indeed, be worthless and a waste of your time.

Want to produce or direct? It’s more important who you know - so there are THREE schools that will give you the connections you need: USC, UCLA, NYU.

Want to be a studio exec? Then you need a business degree. Most studios won’t hire film majors.

Want to work with state or international incentive programs? That’s probably more of an economics/statistics thing.

Consider your end goals and see if you can get some degree that’s more specific. You may be better off with, say, a law degree and a minor in a foreign language.

Like bidness pointed out, the best way to break into the film industry, in your situation, seems to be via the business route. A state school film degree will not allow you to become the next James Cameron, but a state school business degree, in conjunction with a few years of quality work experience, will allow you to penetrate the film industry via business.
