International Development vs. International Management

Hi,

My daughter was accepted to the Faculty of Art and the Faculty of Management. She needs to chose between International Development Studies (school of Art) and International Management (school of Management). Can any McGill students compare these programs?

Thank you.

Management generally provides better career planning services than Arts. The Management building, Bronfman, also has nicer classrooms. I can’t really compare the two programs because I am not in either of them, but from what I’ve heard IDS classes generally have a lot more people in them, so it doesn’t make for as good of a learning experience.

From another perspective…

I am in IDS arts. First of all, if you’re an international student, Faculty of Management is going to cost you $8-10,000 more per year. This year the Fac of Management is raising tuition and said will continue to do so at least for the next three years.

Regarding classrooms, Faculty of Management students typically stay in 1 building - Bronfman. Yes relatively newer, but as an Arts student (IDS) your daughter will be taking classes all over campus. Some buildings are much newer than others. Personally, I’ve found the older buildings/rooms cozier.

“I’ve heard IDS classes generally have a lot more people in them, so it doesn’t make for as good of a learning experience.” - I don’t know how Management works, but in Arts all introductory classes are large and get progressively smaller. I’ve taken large and small sized classes at McGill, and I can tell you honestly it doesn’t matter. It all depends on the professor, and that is kind of trial and error as I imagine it would be at any uni.

IDS also has streams (concentrations). Look online to see if your daughter would be interested in those courses and which stream vs the ones offered by Management.
