International+Fin.Aid+Asian

How will all these factors affect my chances at HYPS and other top schools (given that my profile is like the typical CCer’s)

What part of Asia? As if you’re from Korea it’d hurt you more then if you were from Myanmar etc. And I’m not sure what you mean by typical CCers tbh as there are diverse people around here. But if you meant stereotypical Korean/Asian -

4.0 GPA
Perfect SAT Is and IIs
Extra-curriculars only because they are forced for college

Then that would be very hard. If you have ECs you truly are passionate about and you have a hook, you can get in.

But it is true and it hurts me too as I’m Indian + International but those three factors will hurt you. Not sure about the Fin Aid hurting as these unis have need blind I think. But international + Asian does hurt especially if you seem to be amongst 40 or so Daewon kids who do ECs because they have to and get perfect SAT scores. The kids that work the system by doing stuff just for uni can be spotted out. Do something you LOVE and express how it marks you out from the stereotypical Asian who is just playing the system.

But if you have PASSION and UNIQUENESS then you’ll get through. If you don’t then it’ll hurt more as there are so many Koreans and Chinese who get 800s for math, chemistry and physics plus 2300-2400 in SATs and 4.0 GPAs and the HYPS adcoms look for uniqueness and not merely the kids that come from the conveyor belt that is Daewon etc.
