International-friendly schools

Hi. This is a post for a friend of mine. She’s considered an International student. She has lived in California for three years, has AMAZING grades and ECs, and somewhat bad test scores (reading is not her thing) but she’s improving. She’s Korean, if that matters.

She wants to go to a good school in the US. She prefers California, but doesn’t mind leaving the state. Her top three are UCLA, USC, and Cornell.

She’s interested in math, art, and education (as in teaching).

What are some International-student-friendly schools?

Thanks!

Have you asked this question at the international forum? You might get some good suggestions there.

“reading is not her thing” Is this because she still is mastering English, or could there be an unidentified dyslexia? Be warned that it can be hard to get a firm identification of a dyslexia when the student being tested is classified as an English Language Learner. However, if this is suspected, it is worth pressing the issue. If there is no underlying issue like that, it still takes 5 to 7 years to fully master “academic English”, so the reading will be challenging for her for some time still. One thing that she needs to take into consideration is that whatever she wants to study in college will involve massive reading. Until she is ready for that she should plan her courses very carefully. Since she is in California, she may want to consider starting out at one of the community colleges and take a lighter load for the first year.
