International Relations Grad school

I am currently a second year environmental engineering student at Michigan Tech. I am realizing I am not interested in my future job prospects if I stay on my current path. I am becoming very interested in International Relations and feel it better aligns with my passions.

I realize going into a different field for grad school is common but ENG to a IR seems like a pretty big jump to me. Would having research experience/internships in my current field help with getting into IR grad school?

I currently have a 3.2 GPA and I am in a certificate program called the “Pavlis Institute for Global and Technological Leadership.” The program has leadership coursework and I will be able to go abroad for five weeks and carry out projects based on the needs of the people in country(Ghana, Tanzania, India, or Malta).

With time to increase my GPA and get involved with different opportunities on campus how do my odds look at getting into a decent IR program?
