International student getting into UCLA, UCB

My son has the following #s
CR - 630, writing - 680, Math - 800
SATII - Math 2C 800, Physics- 780
Grade 94% (School, which is probably #1 international school in Korea, doesn’t issue letter grades with 4 AP courses. I believe it is A-). Class rank is 50 percentile in a class of about 80. EC is probably on the weaker side.

He applied to L&S undeclared, I believe, with intended major as CS to both schools.
I heard that UCLA is expanding its international student pool this year.
Is there anyone in the forum who are familiar with UCLA, UCB’s admission standards for international students?

well his SAT scores are definitely in the upper quartiles for UCLA and his GPA is pretty solid too … if he has a good essay and recs he should be able to get in …

though his class rank is kinda low

thanks for the response. I assume the ranks are sent in as well (don’t know why I never asked the counselor about this) and considered. These kids seem to have turned into a studying machine… It is kind of silly, since even I was surprised when I heard that he was in that range… It is a strong private school but I thought he’d be doing better than that… It seems like such a disadvantage that he went to this school. I wonder how much the rank will be weighted.

well It is an important factor in admissions but I think his scores and GPA more than enough make up for it …

chance back…

Just wondering, what school does your son go to? Because I hear claims all the time from international students (and from students in the US too!) that they attend the most competitive high school in their area. And I lived in Korea for half my life and I talk to my cousins there all the time.

I don’t want to invade your privacy though. Just curious. :P

I guess I’d like to keep privacy but I can tell you it is either SFS or SIS as they are similar to each other. These are schools for foreign nationals who reside in Korea. However, as I was searching for his chances after the post, there are Korean schools for the locals that concentrate on sending kids overseas. I found their stats are so amazing. One school called Daewon was in NY Times which talked about the schools SAT average score of 2210 or something wherease Philips students average is below 2100.
I saw another local school (Yongin) with even more impressive stats, sending about 15-20 per year to UCB and they seem to be the 50 percentile guys. Total is since inception. Amazing… My son’s chances seem lower.

UC’s are much harder for internationals to be accepted into; they’re competitive enough for American students out of state. You could broaden up your scope on where you want to send your child overseas, or stay in Korea! It’s a great place. I haven’t been there in eight years. :P

Rank seems low, but he definatly has a chance at both UCLA and UCB. Wish him luck :)

Thanks. He was recently ccepted at UIUC CS and we were wondering whether he could land in the West and avoid the weather.

My son received admission into UCLA engineering school as CS major. UCLA didn’t devalue my son’s gpa… So far 15 people (out of 90-100) got accepted to UCLA from his high school. Frankly I believe his SAT2 scores were the decider if he was on the borderline. Anyways, those who answered the question were quite good with their predictions.
Also, I noticed that he’s considered OOS as he is a US citizen (I learned this from either Cal or UCLA site).
We thought he applied as undeclared but… He applied to many colleges so he isn’t sure.
