So im an international student in bu and I am currently considering living off campus next year with a group of friends. However, I know that my friends will want to host parties in which drinking might be involved and this opens the risk of having the house busted by cops so I’m a little hesitant to join into the house. So, this being said, I was wondering if any of you guys know what happens when the cops bust a house owned by international students, a la, what are the repercussions for said students even if they are (or aren’t) inside the house when the bust happens. Please let me know. Thanks.

If the cops find marijuana after busting the party - even if you are not smoking it or in personal possession of it, everyone in the house will be arrested for “constructive possession” of it. It’s a misdemeanor that says you’re guilty of being in the presence of an illegal drug. It requires a pre-trial hearing, charges being filed and most people have to opt into a diversion program to keep from getting a permanent criminal record (this requires community service, a fine, and sometimes revocation of drivers license). Plus the cops tell the school so everyone arrested has to face potential probation (or expulsion/suspension depending on their current disciplinary standing with their school). The owner or renters of the home (those who live in the house) may also be arrested for a felony of maintaining a dwelling for drugs, etc. If you are certain no one does drugs, and you can keep underage drinkers out, you should be okay.
