International Student in Texas, Strong Grades, Weak Extracurriculars

  • Texas Public High School, living in Texas, International, female

  • Intended Major(s): Engineering, Computer Science, Biochemistry, anything STEM really

  • Rank 5, 4.0 GPA, 5.9 something weighted, 5s on AP CSP and AP HUG

  • Awards: National French Contest gold medal

  • Extracurriculars: Cho Dan Bo in Tang Soo Do (a few levels below black belt in karate), volunteer at karate, music classes for a couple of years

  • Currently a Sophomore

  • I honestly just want to get into UT Austin or A&M. I would be okay with UTD as well. I understand that I don’t have strong ECs. I’ve been trying to be more active in clubs this year, but I have really struggled to handle those along with schoolwork. I would appreciate a healthy dose of reality and any suggestions on how I can turn my struggling application around.

Schoolwork is the first priority. Continue with your Tang Soo Do.

Too early to chance you but you’re on a good path. Make sure to keep up with classes in all the core areas. Next year discuss budget with your folks. College isn’t cheap

Good luck.

Keep your grades and class rank up. Class rank is the biggest admission factor for Texas public universities.

I think that your ECs are fine. You do not need a long list of ECs. This is definitely not a case where the longest list wins. Instead, in terms of ECs, do what is right for you, do it well, treat people well, and don’t worry about it.

And academics are way way more important than ECs. Keep your grades up and you should be fine.
