Hello,

I’ve been admitted to a PhD in econ at NU. I’m an international student from Italy. I was wondering how many international students there are at Northwestern. Are there lots of people from Europe? I’m also interested in Japan so I was also wondering if there are Japanese students there too?

Thanks!

Econ PhD at Northwestern? Congrats! You must be really bright!! Don’t worry, you’ll find many foreigners in the econ department.

I work with the International Office helping international students (grad and undergrad) adjust to American culture, and I can say in my experience a lot of the people I get matched up with are in Econ. During the last 9 months I’ve been paired with 3 different students – two from China, and one from Germany. That’s obviously not entirely representative of the Econ grad students, but I can tell you there are many international students, with a large portion coming from Europe.

The word “adjust” sounds slightly scary…
But good to know that there are many international students in Econ!

Haha. That’s the word the IO usually chooses – I’m not sure if I’d use it, but I am pretty accustomed to it that I used it without thinking. Although I would probably say in Mexico, I had to “adjust” to the culture… I hope there isn’t any negative connotation there for you.

Yes, you will definitely find many international students in the Econ department.
