Is there a noticeable difference between the normal version and the international version? I believe the homework is online, so I just need the actual text for this class. Is this correct? Can get by with the international version for this class?

Yeah the international textbook is exactly the same. It just has a soft cover. I used the international textbook for Acctg 215, so I know from experience. It is word for word the same. You will just have saved a ton of money over everyone who bought it from the bookstore! Only thing to keep in mind is that you will have to buy an access code for the homework website, so make sure to factor that in when deciding if you are getting the best deal.

Okay, sounds good. However, when I emailed the professor for my class he said, “The international edition will not work. The content is quite close, but the page numbers and problems differ slightly so using the international edition would put you at a disadvantage when it came to the readings and homework problems.”

Is the homework online so I don’t need the homework problems in the book? How different are the readings?

My best friend’s going to UW and she always buys the international version - whenever it is available and significantly cheaper than the ‘normal’ version.

Her prof told her the same thing for her sociology book, that it wouldn’t work because the page numbers are different, etc. Well, she bought it anyways and from her experience it is exactly the same content at the exact same pages.

I recently started buying the international versions myself for textbooks at my CC and so far I basically made the same experiences as my friend. I’d say go for it and if you should notice that it is vastly different than your friend’s book then you can still go to the bookstore and buy it there - buy the normal version from amazon and then return the book to the bookstore. (That works at my CC but you should probably check if it’s the same at your bookstore).

I took Acctg 215 in Spring 2010, so it is hard to say if something has dramatically changed. And I am under the assumption that you have a different professor than I did (I had Paperman). But my experience was that the international and normal textbook were exactly the same, I think even the page numbers were the same. And we did all of our homework online (if we did do any problems out of the book, I think each version had the exact same problems, too, because I don’t remember having any issues with that). The main homework is hosted online, though, for that class.

Your professor may have said that because it is true, but he also may have said that because he has never used the international version and therefore cannot guarantee its contents. And he may have said that, because often times professors are in some kind of relationship with the textbook publisher, and he may have some incentive to say so (this is PURE speculation, though).

It is a small risk to buy an international version, so just weigh that risk in your mind and decide if you feel the savings are worth a chance of some small hassles.

I didn’t take that specific class, but I’ve used many international versions.

Most of the time, if the problem numbers are different they are just scrambled. Like #2 is #5 and vice versa. I did readings out of the book and homework with friends. I would save $70+ and the inconvenience was worth it to me.
