International Woes

I’m an international student from Nigeria. Over here I’m a really good student, one of the top in a really competitive school. However here there are no opportunities for AP classes or research programs. Its all just basic classes for everyone. Everyone can only pick 9 subjects and no more. So basically I’m stuch with a very simple looking transcript that doesn’t show all the effort and hardwork needed for the classes I picked. I have no research experience whatsoever either. I’v got loads of Extra curriculars though…won the award for most-service dedicated person in the school and I did okay on my SAT, though I’m taking it again this weekend(got 2130 last time, sure I can bring it up by quite a bit).
I’m just really worried that everyone else would have a far more competitive application than I will thanks to the way the educational system is run here.
What do you all think??

I would not worry. MIT does get quite a few applications from Nigeria, and does have some understanding of the school system. The school report does show what the school offers, and the interview report also helps to put your achievements in context. As long as you are taking the most challenging program offered by your school, then you should not stress too much for at least two reasons:

 1. MIT does understand this, and you are definitely not alone. It should not adversely affect you.
 2. It is rarely useful to stress about something you cannot change or affect in any way.

They will evaluate you based on your circumstances

OK thanks a lot.
