Internationals

What are the obstacles internationals will face if they want to become a doctor? Will an examplary record help overshadow those obstacles? Thank you :)

The 2 big obstacles are:

1) fewer than 50 US medical schools will even consider internationals for admission (And there your competition will be from your fellow internationals–not from US applicants–since internationals are considered in a separate pool.)

2) there is no financial aid for internationals at most US medical schools

See: [Medical School Admissions Policies Towards Non-US Citizens](<a href=“Home - NAAHP”>Home - NAAHP)

An exceptional record will help with the first issue; it won’t help at all with the second.

What about doing your residency? I heard internationals also encounter trouble their.

Also true. Only 23 states will license internationals–and you must have a state medical license in the state in which your program is located in order to begin a residency. Additionally, internationals are ineligible for any residency program sponsored in whole or in part by NIH funds. Lastly, a number of residency programs will not consider internationals because they do not want to deal with the sponsorship (HB1 visa) paperwork.

Well, Loyola has recently implemented a change to become more friendly towards undocumented immigrants. I don’t know if you fall into that category but you can check it out. Loyola med school to admit undocumented students;
