Simply put: If you download something that you should be paying for, for free… it’s illegal and not allowed at UCSD…

Yes UCSD’s T3 internet IS VERY tempting but you must download all the stuff you need at home.

They are not secure at all; UCSD has the legal right to monitor ALL your activities. Pffft like you would even have a case for privacy to argue when you’re caught already pirating…

Hey its your hard earned admission. And is a Mb’s or Gb’s of data worth getting kicked out of UCSD worth it?

Any torrents will send a red flag to UCSD. Sites like megaupload, mediafire, rapidshare are fine. …I don’t see why 4chan wouldn’t be fine…? I don’t know what futaba is.

Futaba is japanese for forums I think… forums are okay just as long as they aren’t of stuff not allowed.

4chan is a bit iffy considering it has both good and bad parts…

4chan has lots of undesirable people (LITERALLY) who use it as a means of socializing… who stick to a specific place of the site, those users were the ones who hacked those youtube videos and others… I’m pretty sure either the homeland security or the FBI keeps tabs on it… considering some people call it “internet terrorism”…

~ However 4chan does have some good parts I heard such as fashion, cars, and etc.

torrent engines (utorrent, bitorrent, azerus, etc)
Don’t do it. That being said, some of my friends risked it and torrented several gigs of software and movies they couldn’t find on Rapidshare or Megaupload via Demonoid and Piratebay. I also legally downloaded maybe 30 gigs worth of Windows 7 betas when they were letting people try it for free.

Megaupload
You should be fine. Someone I know that downloaded close to 2 terabytes of movies and music with Megaupload and Rapidshare.

Mediafire
Don’t see why it’d be any different from Rapidshare or Megaupload.

Rapidshare
See Megaupload above.

btjunkie
See #1 above.

thepiratebay
See #1 above.

4chan
My suitemate was on /b/ all the time. I’m on /p/ and /fit/ all the time.

futaba channel
No idea.

How will they track it to you? Every dorm has multiple wireless connection, making pin pointing violators impossible. It will be like searching for a needle in a haystack…

You’re kidding me right? If you want to use the school’s internet connection, you have to register your computer/ipods/xbox’s etc. with ResNet. That will tie your devices’ IP addresses and MAC addresses to your student account.

I’ve heard like… DOZENS of stories of people getting caught. I promise you’re not going to get away with it, and certainly not for long periods of time.

Also, when you move off campus and have to use the proxy server to access online reading materials from the UCSD library, always always remove the proxy before downloading stuff!! People have gotten caught this way too.

as long as it’s direct download, ur fine.
so…2,3,4 is fine
i downloaded music/dramas/youtube vids all the time…lol

however, do NOT torrent. make sure the torrent program/whatever is also disabled/off on your computer…do not open those files (i dont even know how to use torrent so i dunno the correct terminology to use…but make it so the torrent is off, or else UCSD can detect it )

You’ll still be taking a risk. Like I said, someone I knew who totally isn’t me downloaded a TON of music and movies using Megaupload AND Rapidshare and nothing’s happened.
