I’m hoping I can get some suggestions as to other options for internet and phone services.

Currently we have AT&T for our landline and internet DSL. We have Comcast for cable. We’ve been happy with both.

Last night an AT&T rep came to our door and told my husband that they were switching out all of the internet in the area from DSL to the fiber optics internet service and that it would provide us better service and cost us less. He and my husband talked for awhile and I told him 3 times not to make any changes to what we currently have.

After he’s finally done talking to the guy he tells me that he didn’t order anything but he has an appointment to get the internet changed. Of course, I’m suspicious and look at the paper that he got and right there it has that they’re changing our service to U-Verse phone/internet/tv. After the promo period, it’s going to cost us more than what we have now.

I called AT&T and found out that the internet by itself will be a little higher per month and after the promo period will go to $40-something per month, much higher than we’re currently paying. The sales rep was very misleading about this.

They told me to get anything cancelled I need to talk to the public relations department, I’m sure who will be trying to talk me out of it. I am so mad about the whole thing that I’m thinking of changing to a different provider altogether.

Sorry to make this so long, but I’m hoping to get some good options for fast internet at a reasonable price, as well as a service for our landline. We’re not ready to give that up yet.

Oh, and we’re in northern CA if that helps.

DSL generally maxes out at 3 mb. ComCast service is typically 15-25 mb and you can get up to 100 mb if you want. Fiber is a lot faster than 3 mb so you should get much better internet performance if you go with fiber. We have ComCast 25 mb and is very good for VOIP to the point that we make 90% of our phone calls using VOIP even though we have a landline - I would like to get rid of the landline next year.

In general, I think that you’d get a better deal with a package deal from one vendor but I do like the idea of redundancy in case one service goes out. I’m actually surprised that the upgrade in internet isn’t costing you that much more.

My kid has AT&T uverse and internet access (fibre - not DSL, which is outdated technology) but doesn’t have a landline - only uses the cell phone which is what many people are doing now and which is what I’d do if I was smart. I know other people with uverse and the internet access that comes with it.

The uverse and internet access work fine.

As far as cost - you just need to compare. Since you have comcast it s/b pretty easy to compare the costs based on what you’d actually subscribe to as opposed to some huge packages. Ignore any of the ‘promotional period special pricing’ since that timeframe’s over before you know it.

It seems that you could cancel anything your H might have ordered with no issues if it’s done within the first 30 days but I’m not certain on this. I know you can with cell phones.

If you’re changing things around and want to save costs you might want to consider just getting rid of the landline and sticking with the cell phones. I think landlines are a relic of the past (even though I haven’t canceled mine yet but keep thinking about it).

You can cancel a contract in writing within three days that they sold door to door.
Don’t bother calling them up, just send it certified mail & make them sign for it.

We have Verizon for cell coverage & Clear for Internet. No cable.

I know what we have is outdated, but if it works for us and is cheaper, then we’re good. The fibre optics sounds nice, but at twice the cost of DSL, it’s hard to justify changing right now. Maybe when the kids are out of college, we might be able to upgrade things a little.

We just can’t let go of our landline yet either. We get all of our personal calls on our cell phones and everything else on the landline. Change is hard!

I did end up calling and they took care of cancelling the order. They were very nice about it, but I still think the sales guy lied on a couple of things and was very misleading on others.

I told H that he’s not allowed to answer the door anymore or take calls from sales people. :)
