internship dillema...

I am a journalism major, and I am leaning towards the print aspect of journalism, but I still am thinking about the idea of broadcast, speifically in the sports field. Now, I live in a smallish city where there are not alot of media outlets, so I applied to various internships at radio stations and TV stations and newspapers in New York City. I was hired at Radio Disney, which wasn’t my first choice (ESPN radio was), but nonethyless, I was excited. However, this week I had an orentation session for the internship, and im not so sure now. It seems like it is mostly promotions and sales based, which sounds interesting, but its not really what I want to do as a career. Will this look good because it gives me sort of a wide back ground, or bad because it isn’t speifically reltaed to what I want to do?

Also, I really don’t have a good idea of Disneys products, like shows and that sort of thing. However, I realize that Disney is a very big name, and it is in the most visible media market in the country, so it is a great oppurtunity for me at such a young age (I will be a college Sophmore in the fall) which may be a stepping stone to other internships/jobs in the future. Additionally, if I wasn’t going to do the internship, I would just be at home for the summer working my crappy job, which the idea of that doesn’t really excite me, but at the same time, i dont want to spend lots of $$$ on the living costs of NYC. So what should I do here? Im sorry if this is sort of rambling, but I would like others input

Hmm…we seem to share a dilema, with the notable exception that you seem to have an internship available already :-)

I’ve been looking around at internships at publishing houses (english major), so I can empathize with having to restrict the search to places like NYC. I hear that the vacancy rate in Manhattan right now is around 3%…ouch! Plus the costs are so high it seems difficult to actually pay the rent with an intern’s stipend. If they offer you any insights on that difficulty I would appreciate the knowledge!

As for your worries about the work itself, I would say that it cannot really hurt you to experience. However, I certainly understand wanting to jump right into what you love most. I would say that if you manage to find something more directly in line with your desires you should do it. If you can’t find anything or if that orientation means that you are stuck with it, don’t despair. Being in the general atmosphere should be pretty cool.

funny how both of you spelled the same word wrong.

I would take the internship with Radio Disney. Think about the while picture…you are only a sophmore and you still have two more years to go in college. You can apply for the ESPN radio internship again, and I bet that you would get it the second time seeing as how you would have radio experiance AND had an internship with the company that owns them…Disney! take it, it’s a great opportunity. Anyway to get Disney on a resume is awsome

I have worked in journalism in both editorial and promotions. It’s important to understand the business aspects of publishing. To gain that sort of background in sales and promotions can only be good and broaden your experience.
