Hi, I’m a student, not a parent, but this is a topic that I’d like some parental input on - thanks a lot in advance!

I’m a female college student, and I’ll be doing an internship in NY this summer. It’s going to be my first time living in NY, and I’m looking forward to it. I’m currently deciding between renting a room in an apartment through craigslist and enrolling in one of the intern/student housing programs (NYU, studenthousing.org, etc). Obviously the latter will be more sheltered, safer (at least it will appear safer) and fun, similar to a college experience, but it is also twice as expensive. If I choose to rent a room in an apartment, I’ll mostly likely be living with a older woman where I can have my own room.

It will be difficult for me to afford the intern housing program, but not impossible. I realize this is ultimately a decision that my family and I have to make ourselves, but I was wondering if any of your sons/daughters have rented apartments or done intern housing programs, and if they were happy with the option that they chose. Also, I’m sure there are some NY locals out there, what’s an safe but affordable place to live in Manhattan, if such havens exist?

Thanks a lot! :-)

It’s usually cheaper to live at college dorms in the summer. I just went through it with our summer interns. I think I would be worried having my kid living with someone in a apartment that I don’t know. For 12 weeks it should cost about 3000-4000.

It is possible to find a place for much much less than that, but if you’re new to NYC and don’t know anyone, you’re better off enrolling in student housing. It can be an intimidating place until you’re acclimated. But most of Manhattan is plenty safe if you pay attention. It’s easiest if you find a place south of 125th st. though.

We searched hard, even looked into Jersey City. We couldn’t find anything cheaper.

I would stay away weekly hotel rentals. There tend to be more transients. With college dorms, you need to be a college student to live there, security is better.

It is definitely possible to find a room in an apartment for around $1000 as a summer sublet. This doesn’t include food though. And it is probably not a doorman building so I agree that a dorm might be safer.

You might try contacting various colleges in NYC (Columbia, NYU) to see if you can get access to their listings for summer sublets.

My D has personal experience with the LoftStel on Greene Ave (Brooklyn). Safe, inexpensive, close to Manhattan, and good people. [LOFTSTEL | Greene Avenue](http://www.loftstel.com/nyc/locations/greene.php)

She stayed for a month while she searched for a longer term share.

Given the choice, I’d go with university housing. The question is, have you already applied? I know that NYU is still accepting applications but there’s no guarantee that you’ll get a room. Availability is very limited at this late date. Even if you are accepted, it’s unlikely that you’ll get any choice as to which dorm, or which type of room, you’ll be given. The price can range from $160-350/week and the mealplan is $110/week. If you have any interest in going this route, I’d recommend you call them immediately.

I know a student in your position who stayed at the 92nd street Y. I don’t know if they are still accepting applications. It is in a pleasant UES neighborhood and near the subway.

This is probably not an option for NY City, but anyone reading this tread for info on internship housing in a college town might find it useful. One of my friends rented a room in a fraternity house on campus one summer (a female friend). It worked out fine for her. She had no Greek affiliation before or after that experience. I think it was pretty inexpensive. You want to find out about using the kitchen facilities, though.

Our student is interning in Houston this summer-found a great garage apt (furnished, utilities, etc) near Rice U. I know that doesn’t help your NY situation, however, trying to rent something near a university might very well be a less costly option. Our student found many apts that current students were willing to sublet for the summer that were furnished, etc. Check the local U’s website for off-campus housing options for their students. Craigslist is good, but local U had a website where people could list rentals for off-campus housing; it was created just for students. That is how our student found a lot of options for students wanting to sublet their apts for the summer, plus we felt that it was a safer option as well considering it would be an area where other students lived. I, too, would be a little leary of living with someone such as the situation you have described. And, ultimately, if you just can’t find off-campus living, then I think that the dorm setting might be the safest.

letmepass-- I live across the street from one of the residences offered on studenthousing.org. If you want some info, please PM me, and I would be happy to answer questions!
