Internship Opportunities

Hi, I’m an international student from Canada and I was just told by a friend that internship opportunities at NYU wouldn’t be possible for me unless the company that I would be working for requests a green card for me. Is this true? Does the school cover green cards or do the employers? THanks in advance

Well that would pretty much ruin the best part of going to NYU, wouldn’t it? Sorry I don’t have an answer, but I’m Canadian too, and I totally won’t be going if this is the case.

I’m an US student who applied internationally at schools in Scotland and I know that over there, you can work a limited amount of hours as long as any income you make is not necessary to support yourself. I’m not sure how this would work with unpaid internship hours since there would be no money involved. In any case, NYU should have either a number for international students or someone in the admissions office that would know. I would look around their website for someone in an international office that might have an answer to your question

NYU most certainly does not cover green cards, so if you want to work in the US full-time after graduation, you will have to find a company willing to sponsor you. However, I believe F-1 visa holders can work at paid internships through OPT (which is not a green card). I don’t really understand the details, but here’s the NYU website for it:

I would contact them to get things clarified, but I don’t think I would worry about being able to work. I definitely know Canadian kids that’ve gotten internships here.
