Hi guys, I wanted to hear if you think I’m screwed for college apps. So basically I’m applying to semi-selective schools such as Boston University, Syracuse, NYU, and my GPA and SAT are both ehh, 3.27 and 1210. However, I’ve had a paid Real Estate marketing internship that applies to my major and other applications for my major such as politics editor for my school paper. Lastly, the CEO of the Real Estate company that I worked with is providing me a recommendation letter. Will me EC’S balance out my average GPA and SAT and increase my chances? If you have any insight I’d appreciate it. I also have safe schools on my list such as Oregon and U of A.
P.S. - Should I mention any investments i’ve made as an activity? for example, mining bitcoin and ethereum???
I think they will help and that you will probably get into at least one school one your list. However, I think you should consider retaking the SAT or taking the ACT or both. Right now you are almost out of the score range of a lot of those schools and it would probably be their #1 reason for rejecting you, so if you increase your score so that you are more within their range you will get accepted to a much wider variety of those schools.
“a paid Real Estate marketing internship” sounds like, well, a job. Like working at an auto dealership, or a Burger King. The impact that it will have on your chances will largely depend on the nature of the recommendation.
It wasn’t a job, it was an internship. I worked alongside Keller Williams employees and worked on their projects with option for future employment. It is not very comparable to a Burger King job nor a car salesman job at all… I was one accepted of 40 applicants and the only high-school student.
Well they all seem like reaches given your test scores and GPA. If you’re counting on your EC’s to balance out your stats, I suggest you heavily talk about them in your essays and how they shaped you. Bottom line is, you have a very low GPA and a noncompetitive SAT score that will hold you back, regardless of your EC’s.
Your chances based solely off test score and GPA from past year admission statistics:
NYU- 3.38% (high reach reach)
Syracuse- 19.6% (high reach)
BU- 5.44% (high reach reach)
your safeties are not safeties at all.
Oregon-15.14% (high reach)
Arizona- 34.34% (reach/low match)
