(Assuming unpaid internship) I know its stated by Fair Labor Standards Act that its needed but do i really have to take it? What if my schedule is filled and none of the times work. Do I really need to take this course in junction with an internship? It doesnt seem like they would put effort in to finding those who don’t

Many employers will not let students do unpaid internships unless they are earning units, particularly when there is a union involved. They will ask to see documentation from your school. But the units do not have to come from USC. UCLA Extension offers units for entertainment-related and I think other internships; I believe that the cost is around $500, which is a lot, but probably less than taking a bunch of extra USC units. A much less expensive way to go is to take the units through a community college. Not all community colleges will go for this, given the budget crisis, if you are not already an enrolled student there, but others will, and if you are a California resident, this will cost you perhaps $50. There is some paperwork and sometimes there are short papers involved.

what if the employer doesnt mention anything :o

Usually you don’t have to take an internship class if you are getting some sort of stipend (such as $100/week, parking allowance, or lunch money)

Talk to your internship supervisor and see if they’d be willing the reimburse you for parking or something so you don’t have to take the class.

And talk to someone in the Career Center to see if there’s any other options you could consider.
