My child received an internship in the Walmart IT dept, but is not sure. Any past internship experiences or suggestions are welcome.

what is the problem?

What is your kid not sure about? Please explain what the question is, and maybe what your kid’s current education status is and what their future career goals are.

She is a senior. She thinks the internship in the Walmart IT dept, may not be technical enough.

Can she visit or talk to a past intern?

Does she expect to have other options? Even a less-technical Walmart IT internship beats none.

I have heard of kids who interned at the most interesting places who ended up stapling and folding. Others at less interesting places learned a lot about the business. The WalMart IT department has plenty of depth- it has to be a huge operation. A lot depends on the supervisor, and the degree of competence, initiative, and perseverance your daughter puts forth, and the chemistry between the two. Because it is so subjective and so personal to the specific participants (supervisor and intern), there is no way to predict. However, the raw materials for a very productive and interesting internship are really there- resources, need, scale, variety, and low-cost willing labor. Good luck to her!

If they’re a CS major and wants to work in tech they should probably try to find an internship at a tech company, but it’s certainly better than no internship.
