Internships for Trombone?

My son is a freshman at UMass. He is taking performing music in Trombone. What kinds of interships should he look for? And how to find those internships?? We live just outside NYC, so one would think there should be lots of opportunites, if we know where/how to look. I tried Lincoln Center, but all their internships are more for theatre management.

Thank you

Rather than internships, look into festivals. They have fantastic teachers and he’ll learn a lot.

And there are plenty more, these are just off the top of my head.

Another option would be to “tech” this summer for bandcamp at a high school.

thank you, you gave me lots to research

No first-hand experience advice to give, Jeep326, but I’ll be following this thread with interest since my son is in his freshman year at UNT.

We asked him about his plans for this summer over Thanksgiving and he said he was going to get a combo together to play gigs around town. Also he wants to attend a Jamey Abersold summer jazz clinic, and yes, imagep, he definitely wants to be an alumnus tutor at his high school band camp and jazz band clinic. We parents would also like to see him get a paying job locally as well :-)

I second the music festival route (see the summer festival list on this site for a reasonable list of the big ones) if you can afford it and your son is focused on becoming a classical musician. It is an amazing experience for the kids. The free ones (where each student attending gets a fellowship) are very competitive and take few trombone players (two for each orchestra in general). Another option is to attend a brass, low brass or trombone summer camp which tend to be shorter. The Instrumentalist does produce a list of summer camps, both college and high school as these brass camps tend not to be listed on this site. Just check out the faculty and fees plus attendance criteria such as audition CDs. If you do one two week brass camp then there is plenty of time to work as well.

Some of the brass-, trombone- and low-brass-related summer options for you to look into include the Alessi Seminar, Bar Harbor Brass Week, the Summer Brass Institute at Menlo, Rafael Mendez Brass Institute, the Pokorny Seminar at the University of Redlands, the Mulcahy masterclass week at Northwestern, the brass program at the Banff Centre, and the Atlantic Brass Quintet Seminars in Sonoma, CA and Cambridge, MA.
