Internships with big companies

My D has two offers for summer internships from big companies in our area through a chamber of commerce program. These are Fortune 500 companies but nothing of perticular interest though of course a great experience for D. Are these going to look better than conducting a creative writing camp for middle schoolers at local community center? Both are 7 week 9-5 commitments.

My suggestion is that your daughter choose what interests her most, as opposed to packaging herself for some college.

I agree 100% with @suzy100. Please allow your daughter to do what she enjoys as opposed to packaging herself for a school. She needs to be who she is and the right school will come to her.

Another vote agreeing with @suzy100

One more vote for “do what the kiddo likes, not what will look good on a resume”.

She is interested in both and thinking about it. She thinks corporate experience may introduce her to exciting new opportunities as she is still undecided about her major but of course being a summer camp organizer is fun too.

It’s hard when both are appealing. What are the duties at the internships? How in charge is she for the writing camp? I don’t think we really have enough information. Does she love teaching, writing, kids? Otherwise I would lean toward the internship, but that could be a lot of copying and making coffee.

She is very interested in business world but don’t know if some real exposure is involved in this internship or is it just for fetching things so we are waiting for details from both companies. Camp would be very hands on and she does enjoy writing and being around kids.

I think the internship sounds like a good choice depending on the work involved. She could always volunteer as a tutor or help with writing in some other way with middle schoolers during the school year.

Once you have the details of the internship you can sit down and discuss them and then let her choose. Both opportunities are great. My kids spent their HS summers working as camp counselors.

Both sound like good opportunities. My kids probably would have benefited more from the internships, since they had little exposure to a professional/work environment and plenty of exposure to camps. I’d want to know more about the internships, and of course what your child is interested in. For instance, a child who wants to be an English teacher (or any kind of teacher) would probably benefit more from conducting a creative writing camp.

Same here @“beth’s mom” , D never had any exposure either.

What about remuneration? Is there a substantial difference between the 2 opportunities?

All I know is that if something is for 7 weeks then she should enjoy what she chooses to do. These are the last summers of their youth so ideally it’s good to find activities that will help in admission AND are things they REALLY enjoy doing.
