So I had an interview at Exeter. I am actually a reapplicant(last year I had a bad ssat score but this year I’m in the 90s). So anyway I thought I had a nice interview but the only thing is that I’m a stutterer. So I had those moments were repeated sounds for like 3 seconds. The content that I talked about was fine. I talked about Plato, the harkness method, and my other interests. But do you guys think that stuttering can hurt or is it something they know is normal?
A lot of great men have been stutterers, including Winston Churchill. Have you seen the King’s Speech?
I wouldn’t worry about it, but if you are concerned, you can mention it in a thank you note (thank the AO for his patience as you struggled to get the words out due to nerves, tell him how inspired you are by other outstanding men and women who have not let stuttering get in their way. He/she might be charmed and disarmed by your acknowledgement. I know I would.)
FWIW, my husband had a horrific stutter through high school. It was gone by the end of college and rarely surfaces. He even served as MC at a recent event for a non profit and despite the nerves, did not stutter. Not once.
Nope not at all. A boy at my daughter’s BS stutters, spoke at all school meetings, and is a freshman at Stanford this year.
Your stutter won’t hurt you. There is a boy at Exeter currently with a stutter.
Thank God. The interview looking back actually went well. It lasted for about 50 minutes. Nice to know I’m not the only one.
High 5 man! I’m also a stammer!
But, I informed my interviewer about it, before starting our interview!
After all, our interview went really really well!
Are you in 9th grade or 10th grade?
