Interview attire question

I have an interview coming up for a job that is very casual dress code, khaki’s and polo shirt casual. Do I need to we my black power interview suit or are black dress pants and a colored blazer with appropriate top ok?

Wear the suit. It can’t hurt.

Maybe the suit and a less conservative tie and shirt.

What field is it in? My son has been interviewing for tech jobs and he’s been wearing a blazer, khaki pants and a tie. My daughter interviews people in that industry and says that casual attire is the way to go.

I think a suit CAN hurt. It would indicate that you hadn’t done the research. A good rule of thumb for an interview is to dress one level up from what people at work normally wear. So khakis, button down shirt, and jacket (optional) would be what is indicated. MAYBE a tie (but even that might be too much).

Is the person going for the interview male or female?

Your username suggests male, but the descriptions of the clothing options in the original post suggest female. Men don’t wear black suits much or call the garment worn above the waist a “top.”

We might be able to give better advice if you specified the gender of the job seeker.

Oops, sorry, female…

In that case, I vote for the black pants and colored jacket for this particular interview. It follows the rule of dressing one step more formally than the people at the company typically do.

My department is khaki’s and polo shirt casual. Occasionally you will see men in a button down shirt but rarely a tie. As a woman, I wear dress pants and a nice shirt.

When I had my interview for my current position I wore black pinstriped pants, a nice black top, and black/white/grey plaid shoes. A jacket wouldn’t hurt either. When I first interviewed at the company I didn’t know how casual it was - my original department wore jeans every day - and I showed up in a full out business suit. Nobody said anything but I felt very over dressed. The people interviewing me were wearing dress pants and a nice shirt.
