Interview Tips for Andover/Exeter/Groton/Hotchkiss/Choate

Hi!
I’m an international student from Korea applying for 9th grade to Andover, Exeter, Groton, Hotchkiss, and Choate.

I have a virtual interview coming up, and I was wondering if anyone has tips for doing well in a virtual interview or just in interviews in general.
Thanks so much — I really appreciate any advice!

It’s a conversation, and they want to get to know you. Hard as it sounds, relax and be yourself. This isn’t a test!

Do give some thought beforehand to questions like why BS and why this one in particular. For the latter, make sure you’ve spent time understanding the school itself. And have some questions ready.

Be prepared to snswer questions about how you like to spend your free time, what books you like to read, what you want from your next 4 years, what your friends are like, what your current school is like, how you approach your homework, etc.

You are not trying to impress them – you are showing them why you’d be a good person to be in their 24/7 community.

Thank you so much! I’ll make sure to do that. One quick question — for interviews, is it important to use big or “fancy” words, that are SSAT/SAT levels or is it fine to just speak in conversational polite English like I normally do with native-speaking adults and teachers? Thank you so much again

Just talk like you would to any friendly adult. So avoid slang, but otherwise speak normally. No need to use fancy words unless that’s the perfect word. I love your description - conversational polite.

Thank you so much! I really appreciated it
