Interview with a Director

My Interview is on Thursday with the Director of a huge Software Developing company. The company does a lot of other things which I don’t remember or understand. They just sound big and important.
Anyway, this Director invited me to his office for an interview.
What do I wear.
Can I crack jokes, or do I have to act seriously?

“Dress for the job you want” is the rule of thumb. Remember, a prospective employer has every reason to believe you will never look better than you do in an interview. Also, know as much as you can about the company and have intelligent questions ready for the things you don’t understand. Don’t forget to think about what the company can do for you as well as what you bring to the company; they want to know this is a long-term engagement and will be pleased that you are thinking about a career path with them.

Be serious first. If the tone of the interview changes after the seriousness is out of the way, follow your interviewer’s lead.

I’ll assume that this interview is in connection with a college application, not an employment application.

First of all, relax. If this person is being described to you as a “director,” you’re not being interviewed by the head of the company, or even a member of the board of directors. The term “director” in business usually refers to a first-line manager, i.e. someone who manages “individual contributors,” as opposed to managing people who manage other people.

Be prepared by having a good idea why you wish to attend the school, and what contributions you can make to the school community. What makes you uniquely you?

It’s also a good idea to have some questions prepared. You might ask the interviewer how he/she made the decision to go to that school, and what they liked (and disliked) about going there.
