interview: with a regional admission director or with a DC admission officer?

GWU is my S2’s #1 choice. He will apply ED (I or II, not decided yet).

My husband already took him on a campus tour in DC in the spring. Then, he participated in GWU pre college summer program in international relations and foreign policy (he had a BLAST!)

He will be visiting DC again to interview with the ROTC battalion officer in Georgetown (Army ROTC battalion in Georgetown service GT, GWU, and AU).

My son thought that he should arrange an interview with a GWU admission officer while he is there.

I think he is better off interviewing with the NJ regional admission director. I understand that she will be the first reader of his application, and is probably pretty influential and can be his advocate when the final decision is made by the committee…

This adcom already visited his HS. He emailed her before she came to his school to introduce himself in advance. When they met at his HS, the adcom remembered everything he said in the email, and volunteered to link him with a recent GWU grad who went through the ROTC training.

S2 comes across very well in interviews. Since he is an “UNEVEN” candidate (pretty good SAT, terrific ECs, some kinks in GPA, etc), he need to use all of his “assets” to maximum effect to offset his weakness.

So, what would you recommend: do an admission interview with this regional adcom or do it on the DC campus?

I think if he has the opportunity to interview on campus he should take advantage of it. Are you even sure that your regional rep is available for interviews? She is probably on the road a lot this season visiting schools.
At this point he has had some face time with the regional rep and now she remembers him. If he interviews on campus, there will be positive input from another source to bolster his file. He can always email the regional rep after the interview either with a question or just to let her know he interviewed and now is definitely going to apply ED.
Don’t be dismayed if he is interviewed by a student on campus. They use Seniors as admissions interns and they do interviews. I was initially annoyed that we had traveled cross country, only to have students conducting the interviews at many schools (As I said before, many admissions officers are on the road at this time of year) It all works out. The questions are pretty standardized, and he may even feel more comfortable talking to a student.
Just my 2 cents. I’d be interested to know what others think.

Ditto musicmomz

My “S” interviewed on-campus and also by a senior student. The interview went extremely well. His lasted an hour while other students came and went in 15 minute blocks. He also brought a resume which the interviewer appreciated and reviewed it prior to the interview. I think it helps for their “write-ups” on the student.

Accepted RD.

I am also a student from NJ. I visited GW in the summer and had an interview there as well with an adcom (a senior sat in as well). Danielle Toglia is the NJ admissions rep, correct? She is on the road visiting hundreds of schools (about 33% of GW students are from the NJ area). I highly doubt she would have time for an interview. Your son already has a relationship with the NJ rep, why not have him build one with ad adcom?
Hope for the best!

My daughter had a scheduled interview in NJ. It was an all day thing and her interview was with a current student’s parent. Although Danielle was there she did not conduct the interviews.
