Interview

Did the majority of you guys get contacted for an interview through email or telephone call?

my friend got an email. i didnt

i didn’t get one either. I’m in NYC so I’m sure there are alumni. AT least 10 to 15 yale alumni’s teaching in my high school.

You might find some answers/comfort on the RD Applicants: Interview Advice thread. It explains, amon other things, why people in NYC might not get interviews. For instance, ever considered that perhaps none of the Yale alums who teach at your school are interviewers? The vast majority of alumni are NOT interviewers. Especially in major metropolitan areas, applicant interest in interviews can far outweigh alumni interviewing capacity.

About 30-40 kids applied EA to Yale from my school, and all the ones I’ve talked to have gotten interviews… not Fringey, though.

Fringey–I you haven’t heard anything by November 20, follow my advice posted in multiple other interview threads about finding out who your ASC director is and calling him/her.

I definitely will. It’s worth it, it seems.

How would we go about finding out who our ASC director is? Thanks in advance.

akiiriah–Call Yale and ask them. If you applied at the last minute, wait a few more days before you call.

Call Yale and ask. See my posts in numerous other threads for more details.

I had my interview yesterday afternoon at the food court of my mall. The guy who interviewed me was a really nice guy who genuinely seemed to care about what I was saying. It was very informal which made me very comfortable. He simply asked questions such as how my day was, what I do for fun, when I am the most happy, why I am going to college, why I want to go to Yale, what I am most proud of, what makes a good teacher, what is special about my high school, and I can’t recall any other questions. We talked about Yale’s place in New Haven as a part of New Haven, rather than as a defining aspect of the city. We talked about how Yale has been doing what it can as a leading research institution to improve the city. We talked about the American-Cuban relationship after I told him that my mom was Cuban and went to Yale. I asked him questions that I was interested in. OH YEA! We talked about the community environment at Yale and the pride that students have in the school which was really a key point of the interview. We also talked about how Yale is going to win at the GAMMMEEEEEE on Saturday. (GO BULLDOGS!!!)

Questions for AdmissionAddict:

Does Yale assess first the applicants to meet certain requirement before schedule interviews?

How much information like SATs, gpa and ECs does Yale provide to the alumni interviewers on the applicants?

Do Yale alumni interviewers ask what other Ivies you applied?

Are old alumni interviewers better or worse than the young ones? Are female alumni interviewers better or worse than male ones?

There is no assessment to determine whether you qualify for an interview. Different regions do it differently, but there is no pre-screening.

Alumni interviewers get no info about an applicant except name, address, phone, email, high school, date of application, and proposed major.

All depends on the individual alum. There are good and bad in all categories. Hopefully, the bad ones are few and far between. I can imagine that interviewees would be more comfortable with younger interviewers, but I don’t think anyone is better or worse.

AA,

Do they ask if you apply to other Ivies?

Hi uml. My D and her friend were both interviewed in the last week, and neither was asked this question.

i called yale and asked why i never received anything about an interview despite applying october 1st. the person i spoke to said yale chooses people at random, and not to worry if i get one or not.

My alumni interviewer had the following information: my address, phone number, high school, and the fact that I hadn’t always lived in San Francisco (so I suppose he had access to my recommendations, as my teacher said he was definitely going to write about it).

Are there limits as how many applicants from the same high school an alumni can interview ? There is a chance the alumni may know some of the applicants.

Alumni is plural. More than one alumnus/a. JSYK.

I hope not… ~40 kids applied already from my school

I really want an interview… it doesn’t make sense to only interview some kids, and not others. Shouldn’t the process be as standardized as possible?

Anyways, I submitted my app about a week and a half before the deadline, and haven’t heard from an alumnus yet…
