Interviews

My daughter’s first interview (Pomfret) is a few weeks away. They are coming to her school to meet with her. What should she wear? She has read the printed material and has digested the material well enough to know that Pomfret is her first choice at this point. How else can I help her prepare? Other schools she is considering Choate, Walnut Hill and possibly Interlochen. ps–what is a tag?

If Pomfret is her first choice, try to get one other interview in beforehand as practice…even at a local day school. If that’s not possible, then perhaps you or some other non-parent (so your daughter is not overly familiar with the situation) adult could sit with her to ask a few of the conventional questions…search for threads on these. She should be able to speak to her strengths and weaknesses, and be confident and composed. She should be herself and also be able to carry a conversation with an adult (having just chaperoned a few 7th and 8th graders on a church function, I can tell you that not all kids have this skill down yet). I think another MUST is to be (or appear to be) passionate about something. Anything. Well, with the possible exception of videogames and/or pop stars.

She should also come equipped with a few questions of her own…to get answers, but also to show that she’s done her research. Make sure she goes deeper into the website than just the main overview pages.

In terms of dress, again, search the forum for other similar posts. But for expediency, I would offer this: knee length skirt, flats, nice blouse or cardigan/twinset. My daughter wore tailored khakis and a blazer to a few schools as well. I was shocked by the number of kids we saw in cargo shorts and polo shirts (even factoring the timing of our summer tours/interviews). I would avoid jeans, even if they are within the school dress code. A good rule of thumb is dress as she might for dinner with her grandparents at a nice but traditional restaurant. But not so formal that she’s uncomfortable or that if feels like a costume, though.

Just one Dad’s opinion…and based on 5 visits/interviews of top tier NE schools so far.

[It just registered that they are going to her school: If she wears a uniform, and the interview is during/right before or after school hours, I think that she could stay in uniform.]

SevenDad thanks! Her interview is in 20 minutes and I’m sure I’m more nervous than she. She’s dressed for the occassion and she can charm the pants off of any adult in an adult-like manner. Passion… we temper it often. I’ll let everyone know how it goes.
