Intro Screenwriting/Video Production/Intro to Piano courses

Does anyone know if there are any Introductory Screenwriting courses or Intro Video Production classes OR an intro to piano course that you can take? I’ve been looking through the 2011 winter course guide and I can’t find any of these (at least on the intro level, unless youre in the Theatre school/SAC major/In the Music department). I was also looking at taking a creative writing course but the only ones I could find were the FY seminars, and they don’t really fit what I’m looking for. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to say that you need to do the sequence in SAC first to gain admittance to the intro screenwriting or production courses – Film Aesthetics (think it’s 272, can’t recall the course #). Talk to the SAC dept, MaryLou, I believe, for a document outlining the sequence.

For intro piano – have you ever played? If so, you can apply for a 2 credit studio, but your request will be third in line after the performance majors, then school of music majors, then you. You might be surprised how much work is involved, so consider carefully if you’re taking it for credit. BTW, this is private studio, not intro keyboard.I think the later is restricted to music students given the equipment vs. student ratio and that fact that it is a requirement in just about all (BMUS) degrees. Also, even though it’s “intro” general expectation is that you can already read music – so again, your mileage may vary.

For possibly less intensive courses in those disciplines, check out RC courses at the residential college. BTW, nothing wrong with FY seminars in creative writing. Otherwise, I believe admission to cw courses may involve portfolio submission and special permission (if you mean upper level workshops).

Keep in mind that at the SOMTD, those kids have auditioned for access to those programs, so they’re mostly not meant for general consumption, but they do or will occasionally grant access to someone with sufficient background.

Taking the intro film aesthetics weeder course now will open up a number of course opportunities later – there’s really nothing of a production nature that you can take out of sequence. The upper level screenwriting (300) program is also by portfolio/permission only and after you’ve taken the intro screenwriting (which is after film aesthetics…)

At any rate, speak directly with each department to get better information and seek permission to enroll. Good luck!
