Well that giant run-on gobbledy-gook sentence says nothing. In this, THIS particular case, (remember, the topic of THIS thread?? ) the cord and a small battery pack could easily have been tucked into the small metal briefcase-looking case he used for his clock. http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2015/09/16/440820557/high-school-student-shows-off-homemade-clock-gets-handcuffed And in many other cases, they often don’t care about the size of a bomb (e.g. Boston marathon bombers, Atlanta Olympic bomb in backpacks) or they “hide it in plain sight”. We arent talking about some mini device some tv character wants to plant under the hood of someone’s car.
Looks like the father withdrew him from school and will be taking him to the UN to meet with foreign dignitaries and then on to a pilgrimage to Mecca instead of enrolling his son in another school.
“Lesley Weaver, a spokeswoman with Irving Independent School District , says the district would like to share further information about the incident, but can’t without the permission of Ahmed’s parents. Weaver also read a statement from the district during the Wednesday afternoon news conference.”
Where was Ms. Weaver when the kid was taken away and interrogated?! I expect lots more finger pointing and CYA.

Jym626…no need to be nasty.
Anyways, if Ahmed’s really intended on making a clock bomb, other than not announcing its presence by eagerly showing it to the engineering and other teachers as he did at the outset…creating it with its own independent internal power source would be the better route from an engineering design point.
Eliminates an added unnecessary complication of the external power cord which could add another failure point and makes the entire device much more flexible in terms of placement and concealability. If one wants to maximize the functionality of a given device/machine, its best to keep complications as minimal as possible…especially if they’re not necessary for the main functionality of the given device.
I was under the impression that the cord had nothing at all to do with the functionality of the device. I recall Ahmed saying in one of his interviews he secured the box shut with the electrical cable so “it would not be locked.” Believe that video was linked upthread.
LOL cobrat. Your sentence in post 416 was incomprehensible. Gobbledygook and run-on are apt descriptors. This might help understand. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/gobbledygook Now what you said to pizzagirl earlier this evening (post 400) , now THAT was nasty! Tone it down.
So, dumbing it down, the cord and plug might add a factor of a potential point of weakness or flaw. But then again maybe its more efficient than trying to connect wires that could come loose. A short cord with a plug and an external battery pack. Could work just fine. But lets not forget-- this is a CLOCK, not a bomb!

I suspect it is likely that they will not give permission for the school to give further information about the incident, and why should they? They have their version of the event out there. Why continue your education when you can take a break and journey to Mecca, and continue to capitalize on your victim status? When you get your 15 minutes of fame, you gotta go for it!
Where is Mom in all this? Haven’t heard a thing about her.
Considering she said she had no interest or curiosity in learning anything about what’s under the hood of a technical device or being a techie, it is on the mark.
That is one textbook definition of being anti-intellectual in the same manner said HS classmate felt he was justified in his feeling that learning English lit in HS and in general was a complete waste of his time because he’ll “never have use for it” as someone with a hardcore STEM bent and as a then aspiring/current medical doctor.
While one can never feasibly know everything, declaring one has no interest and/or curiosity to even try learn something because “it’s not useful” in one’s life is anti-intellectual.

Maybe in a meeting? At home, sick? Working in her office? Taking a leak?
Why would she have been contacted at that time? She wasn’t in charge.
No Cobrat, it was not on the mark. It was mean spirited, rude and seems to represent a misunderstanding of what she said. This was not an invitation to repeat it. That’s even ruder.
I dunno bus, I said that with sarcasm, but seriously, if it was my kid, I would be livid and assembling a team of butt-kicking lawyers. Hope his parents are doing just that.
“Where is Mom in all this? Haven’t heard a thing about her.”
Maybe she does not speak English well enough.
“While one can never feasibly know everything, declaring one has no interest and/or curiosity to even try learn something because “it’s not useful” in one’s life is anti-intellectual.”
If you’re not interested or curious about every single thing, that’s not anti-intellectual. You’re just not interested in that subject. There are billions of other subjects that one can explore with their time. I have no interest in learning detailed information about figure skating. Honestly, I just don’t care, and I really don’t care to learn about it. Must one be interested in learning about every single thing, or they will be deemed anti-intellectual? You can’t care about everything, and you certainly don’t have time to learn about everything, either.
Linda Moreno is his attorney.
“Linda Moreno is his attorney.”
Ah, okay, hire an attorney who works with high profile cases. Awesome, way to capitalize on those 15 minutes of fame. Get rich the old fashioned way. However, once you start suing, the details of the case can be exposed, which may not be such a good thing.
That and it’s unnecessary if the assumed intended purpose is to build a bomb. Adding a power cord in that context violates basic engineering principles of keeping complications to an absolute minimum whenever possible. Considering internal powersources/small internal battery packs are widely available and easily integrated by most technical tinkerers, there’s no need to add a power cord in this context.
As for the issue of loose wires, that’s much simpler to deal with through application of decent soldering skills which from my observation of many technical tinkerers and aspiring engineers in my family and among HS classmates are basic skills which they easily pick up as part of their passionate co-curricular activities.
I’ve also done some soldering of wires while performing maintenance on a couple of electric guitars with bad solder joints.
My skills are far more basic than someone like Ahmed’s or most HS classmates and yet, I managed to solder a few wires together in the electronic guts of my electric guitars. And that’s far more basic and easier to do than what Ahmed or most HS classmates did putting together those electronics as most electric guitars are far less technically complicated than an average alarm clock.
Let it go. He is a 14 year old kid.
Articles report that mom is Muna Amed Ibraham, age 45.
I am not trying to put Ahmed’s techie skills down. If anything, I am trying to explain how much more impressive his skills…including soldering skills are compared to my own considering the far greater complexity of the digital clock he tinkered with and managed to put together compared with the far greater electronic simplicity of an electric guitar.
I am more than happy to humbly tip my hat to Ahmed’s greater techie skills and Nerd cred here. ![]()
But this isn’t about you. Soldering doesn’t take lot of skill.
I am also trying to answer your point about the loose wire issue you posted earlier. It’s not nearly as complicated of an issue as adding an external power cord which does increase the complexity not only due to the cord itself, but the added electronic components necessary to deal with and regulate the incoming current from the outlet.
