What do behemoth assets and cash positions have in common with a dwindling stock price? You, as an investor, cannot sell the assets … only the stock.

I’m watching the live blog on CNET (6 monitors means I can work too!). I’m more interested in Mac OS X changes. They look very, very nice with several new features for multiple-monitor support.

Mac Pro uses Xeons and Intel probably won’t release Haswell-based Xeons until later this year. I’m disappointed that there isn’t a MacBook Pro update today. Dell and HP have shipping Haswell models now. Also disappointed that they didn’t go Retina on the MacBook Air. Either of those would have been good enough for me.

As you know by now, there are no more cat names for Apple OS. It’s now inspiring California spots. First one is Maverick. A surfing spot. Do I expect OS X Mount Shasta, Napa and Golden Gate in the future? Also, you can now choose between a Siri male or female voice. Because of Maverick, whenever a female Siri talks I will think of Palin and if it’s a male voice I think of Top Gun Tom Cruise.

BTW, why is Pandora suddenly ticking up? Buyers see no threat from iTunes Radio?

iOS 7 is absolutely beautiful and adds a lot of touches that enhance the user experience; from basic touches like having a flashlight available with the phone locked to photos self-organizing by location. The new features seem good but I have to try them. One simple one is that a thief can even erase your phone and it won’t reactivate … meaning don’t bother stealing it. (Remember, now when the police want an iPhone decrypted, Apple brute forces it; they can bypass the lock after a certain number of password tries but they have to brute force decrypt.)

I was very impressed with iwork for icloud but I have to see how it goes. It isn’t a google docs thing where you can share in the same space, as far as I can see, but it should be possible to share a document.

Cupertino, meet Badwater Basin! Yep, that is part of Death Valley!

But have their really exhausted the cat names? I think that Munchkin, Minskin, Lambkin, Dwelf, Skookum, Bambino, and especially Napoleon would be great names for the OS.

I like the Mac OS X improvements. It’s enough for me to upgrade to Mountain Lion. Of course it will probably be some time before it’s released. I have $3K to hand over to Apple should they release a MacBook Pro with Haswell in the next few weeks. AAPL stock sold off after the show. I put in an offer to sell 20 INTC $26 Jul 20 calls. Looks like my ask price might be a little high.

Since H had a genius bar appointment I asked him to pick up another Macbook Air…no can do…come back in 3 days and get the new one…for $100 less.

Had some fun this past two weekends picking up 2 free intel Imacs from previous owners who had serious issues or otherwise didn’t want to deal with them.

First one worked after replacing a hard drive and reseating one of the ram cards.

Second one required a complete stripdown as all fans/fan areas/vents required an extensive dust cleanup. That was much more involved as it required me to take everything out…including motherboard to get access to the fans.

Both work fine now and am typing this on imac2 after 3 days of burn-in testing/use. :D

Did I mention one of the imacs came from a medium sized corporation with their own IT staff?

iMacs are pretty hard to work on so most people don’t care to. I added an external, bus-powered SSD to my 27 inch iMac and it runs like lightning now even though the processor is on the slow side. What I’d like to do is get a Haswell MBP and use the iMac as a monitor. It would be nice if the MacBook Pro could drive 2 27 inch displays on integrated graphics.

They are annoying. However, if one takes proper care, they’re not much more difficult than taking apart laptops to perform maintenance like dust cleanings or replacing parts.

I’ve taken apart my MacBook Pro to replace the disk drive and it took me four hours for the whole procedure. Part of that is that I had to run to Home Depot to get a special tool. I did have the special tool for Apple’s non-standard screws but it wasn’t deep enough so I got one from Home Depot that was deeper. I had to move connectors that were taped down too. I also had some problems with a screw (disk drive bracket) that was pretty stubborn. You have to take out that huge piece of glass with the 27 inch iMacs which is something that I’d rather not bother with.

We have a local Mac shop that will replace the disk drive on an iMac for $50. I assume that they would charge similarly for a cleaning. That’s pretty inexpensive for salvaging the huge display. Of course those with lots of money and the propensity to buy the newest stuff could just give things away. I do that but it’s usually to the local library for stuff in good working condition. I should look around on CraigsList to see if there are cheap iMac deals.
