The state of Iowa will pay $85,000 to several transgender students and leaders of an LGBTQ+ advocacy group for denying them bathroom access and banning them from the state capitol in 2020, under the terms of a settlement approved this week.
Iowa officials reached the agreement with the plaintiffs after spending over three years in court, the Des Moines Register reported on Tuesday. The case stemmed from a confrontation in March 2020, when Capitol building security and members of the Iowa State Patrol ordered roughly 150 students to leave the building after telling trans members of the group they were not allowed to use bathrooms matching their gender identities. The students, along with several Iowa Safe Schools leaders, filed suit in 2022, alleging sex-based discrimination, harassment, and unlawful retaliation.
