I live in Iowa, and I was wondering if it helps me that I come from a state with a smaller amount of students that go to college out of state to get admitted at American. I was also wondering if anyone knew just how many Iowans there are at American University?

According to AU’s Office of Institutional Research and Assessment, there are 12 undergraduate Iowegians. This excludes any people who have, for example, moved off campus and therefore now have a DC/MD/VA permanent address.

I don’t think the fact that relatively few folks go elsewhere than Iowa City or Ames has am impact. Instead, perhaps the fact that relatively few people who choose to go to AU are from Iowa may have a slightly positive impact for you. Your academic credentials will be more important, however–although the fact that AU does value “diversity” (choose your own suspect definition) seems to have some relevance.

As a private university, as I understand it, they don’t really consider geography

Under the category of admission policies and factors AU “considers” (as opposed to “requires”, or “very important factors” or “important factors”) it states in order: alumni relation, geographical residence, racial/ethnic status, talent/ability, work experience and first generation.

I can’t help but think Iowa is a plus for you!

thank you very much everyone!
