This fall, incoming students at Miss Porter’s will each be required to have an iPad.

Same thing for Exeter teacers

At my public school, all new freshman are getting iPads. Personally, I’m slightly annoyed at my district for doing this because my school district’s made a lot of budget cuts in the middle school. Apparently, from my local public middle school they cut all sports teams, the choir, the orchestra, the band, and the musical. So, they’re spending the money they saved on buying as all iPads so we can experience “technology based learning.” I’m pretty sure our district could save money and have students experience “book based learning” instead.

Wow ifax108 that’s completely ridiculous. That’s also happening at my public school to a smaller extent - we keep getting more Smartboards and laptops but teachers and programs keep getting cut. I guess it’s still cheaper to buy a one-time technology item than to continually pay a teacher or fund a program. Still though…

I think iPads at Baylor is good concept, I guess. I’m not really sure how the kids are going to use them though. Personally, at this point in the tablet era, I think laptops are still much better. More versatile, more power, almost as portable. In the future, I think tablets will be a useful tool. But right now with the technology we have, a tablet seems just like a cool accessory. What can an iPad do that makes it so much better than a laptop? In the article they plan to use them as graphing calculators, ereaders, and with Smartboards. Will the students now have to carry around an iPad and a laptop?

It’s a great idea, but I’m still not sold.

They have to budget replacement costs, though. It’s not a one-time expense. Technological toys break with regular use.

Yes, but it is still less expensive.

that’s a link to an article on the exonian website about exeter’s ipad initiatives! if you can’t get to the article, there’s a link on the site somewhere where you can get the username and password to log in.

iPads are overpriced toys. They’re really just crippled laptops with a touchscreen.

lol what taftie12 said made me crack up xD I personally think Ipads are more for entertainment than for school. oh and does anyone know if Ms. Porters includes the ipad fee in the tuition or is it something the students have to buy seperately?
