I’m think of getting one of those magnetic smart covers for my Ipad (not an off-brand, but a genuine Apple version), but I’ve read a few reviews that indicate that it’s been known to suddenly slip off, resulting in one’s Ipad falling to the ground, and the glass face shattering—ouch!). Other reviews rave about how wonderful this cover is. I’ve ordered a crystal clear candy shell for the back of my device, which supposedly does not interfere with the magnetic cover. My plan was to use them together. But now, I’m not so sure it would be a good idea to spend 39 bucks for a cover that could fail me. Does anyone have any experience with this cover? Good or bad, I’d like your opinions. Thanks.

We’ve got one and love it. I don’t really use it as a little stand like you can. I just like the extra protection that it affords.

I love mine, too. I got a bright pink one, so I can find it easily.

We like the Brookstone cover with the integrated keyboard. It looks great and adds functionality.

I have the Toblino 2 leather smart cover. It’s great. The iPad snaps into the cover very securely without covering up the bezel. It’s around $35 on Amazon…has 100s of great reviews. It comes in several different colors. The leather has held up nicely and cleans very well. It provides the ipad with a lot of protection. I researched this for months before settling on this cover. As you probably know, the Apple smart cover has gotten a lot of bad reviews. I wouldn’t trust my iPad to stay secure in it. I throw my iPad in my purse every day and it feels very protected with the Toblino 2 cover.

I have three IPad cases. My favorite is a Targus that is very durable and easels up nicely. It’s well padded and what I have my IPad in most of the time. I also have an INcase which I like too, light weight but does NOT easel up. I have a cute red leather case that easels up also…for when I want a bright color.

I know lots of folks who have the Apple cover, but I didn’t really like it all that much…didn’t seem like it protected all sides of the IPad very well.

Going to Amazon to look for the Toblino 2 cover…I too, have been questionning the magnetic cover but know so many people who have one (or see so many who have one out and about) - I don’t want my iPad too bulky, but I do want to protect it!

MomLive is the Toblino very bulky? Is it correct that it doesn’t cover the back, just the front?

I have the magnetic cover and love it. Mine is orange. I use it as a slight “prop” when it’s on my lap or a table. I also have a padded sleeve that I carry it in. The magnetic cover fits in the sleeve fine.

I went ahead and just ordered the Tobino 2 - sounds like it does cover front and back and yet it sounds pretty thin - exactly what I wanted. Crossing fingers! Plus it supposively does the “on-off” thing when you open/close the cover - a plus!

I have the Apple magnetic cover and like it. I haven’t had any problem with it falling off. The iPad seems to be well protected when I throw it in my purse.

The Toblino 2 does cover the front and back. I don’t find it too thick at all. The magnetic on and off system works great and the easel stand is easy to use.

The only issue I had was when I first got it was it took me a few minutes to figure out how to insert the iPad into the cover but once I got it in, no problems. I like knowing my iPad is fully protected if I should drop it. Recently, I was switching my Kindle from its normal cover to a waterproof one to take it into the bath and the thing slipped out of my hand and hit the floor. Screen cracked beyond use. Would hate to have that happen to my $700 iPad.

I think that can still happen with your Ipad sheathed in a smart cover (even one that covers both the front and the back), MomLive. A case would have to be heavily padded in order to protect it from screen breakage, and even then, there are no guarantees. That’s why I handle my Ipad with extreme mindfulness, knowing how vulnerable that glass screen is to breakage and the knowing too, how easily the thing can incur scratches. My D gave me a really nice leather cover/keyboard combination at Christmas, which I think she said she got from either Brookstone or Sharper Image. It truly does a great job of protecting the device, but the keyboard portion is irksome. It has a disconcerting sponginess of touch, and someone, in their infinite wisdom, thought it unnecessary to have a shift key on both sides of the keyboard, so there’s only one, and it’s on the left hand side. Today, the brown man delivered a Just/Mobile UpStand from Amazon that is truly sweet. It’s absolutely beautiful and very dimensionally stable, and will work perfectly with the Apple wireless keyboard as I dabble in a bit of fiction writing. Now, I need to locate a wireless printer that’s compatible with my Ipad. We need a new printer anyway;).

I have mine in black case from philips that I bought at target on the sale rack. $10!!!
Love it! It has a slightly hard leather cover that covers the front and back of my I-pad.
I love a deal…but also treat my new toy with great respect! I know it is breakable!

True but the quality of the cover does make a big difference. My Kindle was out of its cover when I drop and broke it. I had dropped it several times while in its cover (the kindle original cover that is padded) and didn’t break it.

There is a big difference in the protection afforded by different covers. The Apple smart cover has almost no protection. I looked at envelope style cases but decided that having to take my iPad in and out of a a case every time to use it was too risky for me because I do, unfortunately, drop things from time to time. The reason the Toblino gets rave reviews is it’s thick enough to offer good protection (and the inside is made of a soft microfiber to prevent scratching) without being too thick. There are a number of other covers that are highly rated with similar attributes. Everyone needs to assess their own propensity to drop things. I see many people at work with just the Apple smart cover, so apparently not everyone is concerned about dropping it. Of course, it only takes one drop to crack the screen and it’s about $150 to replace it.

Poetsheart - do you like your apple wireless keyboard? Have thought about getting one (I use my IPad to write also) but have wondered about the iPad losing some of its portability by having to lug around a keyboard. The cases with the built-in keyboards seem very bulky. Unfortunately, the virtual keyboard isn’t very conducive to doing a lot of writing, so it seems as if any major writing project would require a physical keyboard of sorts. I keep debating on this one.

Doesn’t anyone else have a Targus case? It is well padded, leather and protects the IPad very well. It travels well, and while a little bulkier than some of the others, it still tucks nicely into one of my larger purses for travel.

I saw those Thumper, but I am not a “big” purse person so wanted something that I could carry without bulk and use without bulk. Plus I actually bought a Sak purse that has an iPad “pocket” in the back of it - nifty for traveling! But knew that “pocket” would not close if the case was too bulky.

TJ Maxx had some cases before Christmas - I looked there a couple of weeks ago and they were pretty cleaned out but their prices are good. They will probably restock - they had some fun covers that I might invest in more towards summer to change it up. :)

MomLive, I have a roll up wireless keyboard for the ipad. Sharper Image, I think. Christmas present It is less bulky t carry around since it rolls up.

Speaking of keyboards, what are opinions on this iPad keyboard for under$30?

MomLive, I’ve not actually purchased the Apple wireless keyboard because my D has expressed the desire to give it to me for my birthday later this month. But I have noodled around with it at the Apple Store, and Best Buy a couple of times, and I must say that the touch response is wonderful. Plus the design is flat out sexy;). It’s not a very big keyboard, not very wide. And it’s fairly lightweight. I mostly plan to do my writing at home, so I think it’ll work well with the equally sexy stand that I bought from Amazon:
