I just had my 6s battery replaced (even though the old one passed diagnostics), and it performs just about like new again. No more drops to 10% battery life on cold days or sluggishness. Apple reduced the battery replacement cost from $79 to $29.
Current wait time for a replacement battery is 2-5 weeks. You must must order the battery in advance (no walk-in replacement). Alternately you can mail in your iPhone, which takes about a week.
When the part arrives apple will contact you. Then go in the apple store (no appt needed). Make sure it is backed up and ‘find my iPhone’ is disabled. It can take 4+ hours depending on how busy they are, but they will give you an completion time estimate. It took me about 30 min waiting in line to ‘check in’ the phone for repair.
You will have another 2 years or so before your next replacement. I’d urge anyone with short battery life or slow performance to take advantage of this before the repair lines get larger.
I had my 6s battery replaced a few weeks ago. Turns out the phone was still under warranty - by about a month. Replacement was free. Things did improve.
They said that my battery was “bloated” and that it was not replaceable. The good news was they gave me a new phone for the same $29 that I was to pay for the battery notwithstanding the fact that it was way our of warranty.
When I got mine replaced on 6s, it was a 4 hour wait at the store, with an advanced appointment — they had so many other folks also getting new batteries. My battery was one of the few in stock. It was $29+Tax.
The apple store didn’t charge me for a replacement because it wasn’t ready until 90 min after the projected time. Fortunately I arrived late and only had to wait 15 min.
No, you must order the battery in advance to be guaranteed a replacement part for the included models. They will replace it in 1-4 hrs typically once the part is received, so better to come in earlier during the day if you want it back on the same day.
They actually hold parts for a week or so once received, but they will let you reschedule to a later time if you contact them.
Timely thread as I just had this done on Monday. I’m in SoCal and the timeframe was 4 weeks total from when I registered with the Battery Replacement Program on the website to when I received the email that my battery was at the Apple Store. Once you receive the email you have one week to go to the store to have your battery replaced, otherwise the battery goes back into stock and you have to start the whole process over again.
Once you get to the store and check in it takes about an hour. The staff also runs diagnostics to determine if your phone has suffered any damage from water, being dropped, etc. If everything checks out, they replace your battery and you go on your merry way. If they do find damage you are given options for how to fix it in addition to the battery replacement.
So far, my phone is performing better. Previously, the battery would get down to 35-40% and then the decline would accelerate quickly. This was a problem if I was out somewhere and didn’t have a way of charging the phone. I’m planning on keeping my iPhone 6s for a while so I think the battery replacement is worth it. Even if I do get a new phone this one will be my backup. Either that or I will give it to H to replace his ancient Samsung.
Thanks for the reminder. I just called to order my new battery. He told me that there is a 4-6 week wait for the iPhone 6 and I am guessing that the wait will get longer, not shorter, as it gets closer to the deadline.
Yes, I made a Genius Bar appt at my nearest Apple store with a comment saying I hoped the battery replacement was in stock. I went to the appt and they said I was getting one of the last ones they had in stock and needed to return in 4 hours to pick it up (or later). The news about this came out in early Jan 2018, I believe.
I just got back from the Apple Store. My battery took about 2 1/2 weeks to arrive. My appointment was at 12:00 and pick-up time was 5. When I went to pick it up, I was told that my old battery was swelling and couldn’t be replaced and that they were selling me a brand new replacement phone for the 29.95 cost of the battery! Happy camper here. This is an Iphone 6.
our local store advises in advance that even with appointment (after ordering your battery), it will take 3 hours for installation. Can’t believe some of the meltdowns people were having over this! Yeah, I don’t like being without my phone for three hours either, but screaming at the poor Apple kid isn’t helping. He isn’t the one installing the batteries.
The cynic in me is wondering if Apple isn’t banking on people just giving up and getting new phone vs. new battery. Or holding people off until the battery goes back to $79.
