iPhone in Italy

Does anyone have experience or knowledge about the possiblity and cost of using an iPhone in Italy?

Thanks so much.

The iPhone is supposed to be available through Vodafone Italia this year. There are lots of blogs about the release, but Vodafone Italia’s website doesn’t seem to have any mention of it. The purchase and per-month cost will probably be higher than it is in the States, although still cheaper than using a US based AT&T iPhone (or other cell phone) while roaming internationally.

If you already have an iPhone, is it possible to unlock it to use a SIM card from another carrier? That might be the cheapest option, assuming Vodafone offers SIM cards for iPhone.

If it is not possible to unlock the iPhone and insert another SIM card, assuming it is international-use capable, it will cost quite a bit to use it on your AT&T plan while roaming in Italy. First, make sure to sign up for AT&T’s discounted international roaming plan (there might be one for phone and another for data, or just one for phone), which will cost about $4 per month, but the incoming AND outgoing phone calls will be 99 cents per minute as opposed to $1.29 or so. Assuming that AT&T’s international data roaming fee for the iPhone is similar to the Blackberry, the Blackberry international data roaming cost is $15 per MB, which quickly adds up. Browse to just a couple of websites and the cost is anywhere from $15 to $200, depending. Again, I don’t have a lot of experience with the iPhone, so it would probably be best to call AT&T and ask about this specifically if you plan to use an AT&T iPhone that you already have.
