Just got a waning that my phone is damaged by 6 viruses and I need to take immediate action Is this legit or is it itself a hoax?
Probably a hoax from you roaming on the wrong type of websites. The only types of viruses that usually might happen on an iPhone is if you have jailbroken the phone, or you have downloaded an app not from the App Store.
I was on my financial institution’s website. Does iosvpncode.com ring a bell? That’s what showed up with the warning. Do I just ignore?
From Apple forums:
Thanks. Does disabling WiFi and using only cellular help? I use my phone to assess my financial account. I ned to keep my phone secure.
Sorry Iglooo, I don’t know the answer.
They main scam I get is here on CC where a “you have won!!!” arrests the screen.
It’s not on your phone. It is from the web. It won’t matter if you are on wifi or cellular. I find that most often closing the browser and then opening again has eliminated it. If not report to the web site admisntrator and wait for a while.
@oregon101 I never got that scam on CC. So far lucky, I guess.
@Singersmom07 How do you close the browser on the phone? Is there a “quit” button as in the computer?
@Iglooo do you know how to close out your apps? Here’s a couple things you can do:
Close out your apps - from your home screen double tap your home button, then swipe up each small page you see there in a row.
Depending what search engine you use (Safari? Google?) : If Google, open your Google app. At the bottom right of the page tap the most right icon. All your open web pages will appear in a smaller icon. Swipe all those up too.
For good measure, now turn off your iPhone and restart.
It’s a hoax. Ignore it.
Phones don’t get viruses.
It doesn’t hurt to close out your apps and search/history though!
An iPhone can get a virus if you’ve jailbroken a phone and then started downloading apps from a non-Apple site. People do this to use apps for free, for example.
I would clear the Safari browsing histoy by going to Settings and then Safari and scroll down to clear history and website data. I’d also review the settings you have under the Privacy and Security section of the Safari settings
All done. What do I look for in reviewing Privacy and Security? I use Safari in private mode. I don’t down load many apps. Hardly any.
Don’t ever access your financial institution from your phone on wifi (unless it is your own home’s wifi).
It was my own wifi. On the road I usually disable wifi. I thought a phone is more secure than a computer.
I made the mistake of accessing public wifi on my phone while my son was in the hospital. Ack! Someone got hold of my email account and signed me up for almost 1,000 newsletters/subscriptions. Some of them were in foreign languages so it was hard to figure out how to unsubscribe. They also tried to delete ALL of my emails, but fortunately they were just transferred to my trash folder. They also got hold of my credit card and ordered a $400 bike. So I had to get a new credit card yet again. They also got hold of my Instagram account and changed my avatar to a photo of a girl in a skimpy bikini, ha. It was a nightmare. I will NEVER access public wifi again!!
It’s extremely unlikely your iPhone has a true virus unless it’s been jail broken. Clean out your browser data and you should be good to go.
I would access public wifi to read the newspaper, but not to check email or use a credit card or do anything requiring a sensitive password. If I needed to do something like that, I would use a vpn. Also 4g data is more secure than public wifi as it is encrypted. But even that isn’t 100%.
