iPhone Repairs Used to Maximize Profit

Recent articles about Apple’s iPhone reveal that the company has taken action to prevent customers from using third-party service options, where they typically save a lot of money because third-party repair shops charge a LOT less than the Apple company service shop.

Reportedly, Apple customers have discovered that after a recent visit to the company service shop, their repaired iPhone is returned to them with a new set of proprietary screws that, for now, can only be accessed by Apple company technicians. A radio news report indicated that many iPhone owners use reliable third-party shops to get a replacement battery, again at a significant discount.

These technology companies’ practices reminds me of the old General Motors propaganda about “genuine GM parts” for repairs. Nothing wrong with OEM parts but often substitutes from third-party manufacturers perform satisfactorily with quality equal to that of GM. We saw the same thing with the printer companies, who still insist that their ink and toner is superior to substitute products.

We went around the conference room table yesterday and about 1/2 the iPhones had those new screws and half had the Phillips…someone had already found a screwdriver on the internet that will open the iPhone, so the days are numbered me thinks for the “must have Apple repair.”

That said, I have found that Apple repairs my electronics generally faster & cheaper than I can.
